Mood Balancing Coffee

That sounds a little contradicting, right??

I love coffee as much as the next, but what I'm REALLY loving is adding ingredients that have a beneficial effect on my body (other than the highly requested caffeine fix, of course).

Sticking with the holiday theme, I've been adding nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla to add a little flava-flave to my morning situation. What's so special about these ingredients you ask?

Cinnamon and coffee is a game-changer. Cinnamon adds a whole lot of flavor without the added sugars, sugar alcohols, or calories we don't need early in the morning. Not just a pretty face, adding Cinnamon has shown progress in lowering blood sugar. Journal of Medicinal Food concluded that cinnamon has the power to lower blood glucose by 3-5% just by adding in one gram, daily over an extended period of time.

ALSO! Cinnamon is usually paired with something a little more on the sugary side. This means that when we taste it in our coffee our brains are triggered to relate this taste to being satisfied; therefore, helping out our sugar cravings.

At first, I just loved nutmeg for the holiday festivities. The smell alone reminds me of Christmas morning and all the goodness that comes with the holidays. What I didn't know is how this spice can benefit you.

Did you know that nutmeg could possibly boost your libido!? Who knew. Researchers say that it could possibly be because nutmeg stimulates the nervous system. I'd like to hear more, researchers.

Other than nutmeg making the bedroom steamier, it is also a powerhouse spice for antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties relating to improved mood, blood sugar, and heart health!

Collagen makes up crucial parts of our bodies. It not only benefits overall good health, but it has a direct effect on hydrated skin, gut lining repair, joint structure, and repair, along with hair and nail strength.

What caught my eye was how collagen has been proven to decrease your blood sugar levels, therefore calming down those insulin spikes we may have after something sweet. Our blood sugar levels have a major impact on our daily moods. When our insulin spikes, I start bouncing off the walls like I had 4 cups of coffee. When insulin drops, I tend to get cranky, tired, lose focus, and may "step out" for a nap.

Collagen is a great supplement to add to your daily routine to help maintain these mood swings in a tasty and creative way.

+ 1 cup of black coffee

+ 1/3 cup of organic, unsweetened coconut milk

+ dash of cinnamon

+ dash of nutmeg

+ 1 scoop of Vital Proteins Vanilla Collagen Creamer (sub for any collagen if needed)

Add all ingredients to your blender and blend on high for 30 seconds. Careful, it will be steaming with all its frothy goodness.

Top with a pinch of nutmeg and organic honey to taste!

Let me know if you test it out! Tag me on Instagram at @manukaasunday -- I love seeing that frothy goodness.
